Chapter 8
Shelby
I fiddled with the frayed end of the throw pillow and pressed the phone to my ear. "I didn't have a great day," I said. "Let's just get that out in the open."
"Do you want to talk about it?" Hannah asked. A shriek of laughter rang out in the background and my sister sighed. "Give me a sec. Sorry, sis, things are getting loud this side."
"The perils of having a family."
"Of having a toddler," Hannah said. "One sec." The phone scratched and shuffled, and footsteps thumped on the other end of the line, followed by a whispered conversation.
I tuned it out and considered the day. What a damn day. This morning, I'd originally planned on spending my night poring over more work, but Tyler's departure and Anthony's weird behavior had thrown me off my game. I needed an ear and I could count on my sister for that.
"Okay." Hannah's voice was weary. "Okay, I'm back. I'm hiding in the attic."
"In the cupola?"
"That's right. My favorite spot," Hannah said. "I wish you'd come over one of these days. Just come have a glass of wine or some dinner or something. I feel like you're avoiding me."
"I'm not. I'm so not avoiding you."
"I know I was harsh on you about Tyler but I've been trying to up my supportive game, if you know what I mean. I just don't want to see you get hurt. It's a sister's prerogative to be overprotective," Hannah said.
I burst out laughing. "Oh god. I know. You know, today I thought of when I ran over your foot. Remember that?"
"Weeks in a cast? Damn straight, I remember that."
The laughter died in my throat. "How are things?"
"Things are the same as they have been for the last few months. Toddler attitude and laughter. We don't need to talk about me," Hannah said. "I can tell something is on your mind."
"I don't want to lean on you all the time, Han," I said. "I feel like I'm using you as a support column."
"Oh yeah, like a Roman support column. Are you trying to say I’ve got a shapeless figure?"
"Shut up." I stifled a snort. "I'm trying to be serious here."
"Good job."
"Hannaaaaah."
"All right, all right. Just forget about all that using me stuff. Okay? We're sisters. It's what we do," she said. "Remember Jimmy Farrow?"
Yeah, I remembered Jimmy Farrow. He'd been my sister's high school boyfriend and endless source of complaints, gossip and whining on Hannah's part. I'd been right there with her, listening to all the drama.
"I'll take your silence as a yes. So spill it. What's going on?"
"First, I took a risk today," I said. "I corrected my boss's presentation. I don't mean just the typos, I mean I totally spiced it up. I took it directly to him at the end of the deadline and he was surprised to see me. I don't know if he's looked at it yet, but when he does I'll either get fired or thanked."
"Wow. Which do you think it will be?"
"I honestly have no idea," I said, and molested the end of the cushion again.
